Dismantling the Naturals, Clean, organic trends as we look deeper into the ingredients in your hair, skin and bath products.

Over a period of time, we have seen gaining traction in the natural, green, organic product trends as time-pressed consumers are pounded consistently by messages, media and brands conveying chemicals are bad and naturals are good. Chemistry professor Michelle says, "We are a chemophobic culture. Chemical has become a synonym for something artificial, adulterated, hazardous, or toxic." She characterizes chemophobia as "more like color blindness than a true phobia" because chemophobics are "blind" to most of the chemicals that they encounter. Every breath you take has almost as many molecules in it as there are stars in the universe, and each breath contains dozens of different chemicals, some of which, like oxygen, you can’t do without. Some chemicals are superheroes—antibiotics and anesthetics.

The growing disenchantment of consumers, with all things chemical, coupled with a general desire for squeaky-clean natural products, has changed the course, and it is easy to see why the clean-and-green segment has exploded. A report says that over half of Indian consumers make their purchase decisions based on ‘natural or organic’ features influencing hair and skincare. But the question still remains. Are they chemical-free even if all the ingredients are naturally derived? No, they are not. All ingredients in personal care products are purified, extracted or undergo other forms of processing to make them suitable for use.

“Personal care products require sophisticated formulations that use both natural extracts and synthetic ingredients to prevent allergies and irritation and to help keep products fresh,” says Adam Friedman, an associate professor of dermatology at the George Washington School of Medicine. There is no such thing as a chemical-free product. All personal care products — and, in fact, all forms of matter, whether natural or man-made — consist of chemicals. So it is the right thing to say that Nature backed by science is the answer and we focus on the safety profile of an ingredient, rather than the source.

Some may get too anxious about the preservatives contained in the product. Often that is not the case. Not only do preservatives play a critical role in product safety, but they are also often derived from natural ingredients. For example, phenoxyethanol is naturally found in green tea and sodium benzoate can be derived from cinnamon. So it is important to understand science. The clean products are notable for the ingredients they are free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and more.

Let’s just conclude this by saying, because something is naturally derived doesn’t mean it’s automatically safe. Don’t get carried away by all the marketing and communication. Do your research before you make a purchase decision. No one is saying that you should avoid natural products altogether, but rather consider how you assess the integrity of personal care products, quality assurance and be conscious of the ingredients present in the product whether chemical or natural.
